What to do in the days before your operation, and what to expect on the day.
Before the day
- Complete all requested blood tests, imaging and pre-operative screening
- Tell your doctor about every medicine you take, including herbal remedies
- Ask whether blood thinners or diabetes medicines must be paused
- Stop smoking as early as possible — it improves wound healing
- Arrange someone to accompany you home and support you afterwards
The night before and the morning of surgery
- Follow the fasting instructions exactly — usually no food or drink from midnight
- Bathe, and leave jewellery, make-up and nail polish at home
- Bring your ID, hospital file, medicines and a small bag of essentials
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing
On the day
You will be reviewed by your surgeon and the anaesthetist, sign your consent form, and change into a theatre gown. Your vital signs are checked before you go into theatre, and you will recover in a monitored area before returning to the ward.
After discharge
- Take pain medication and antibiotics as prescribed
- Keep the wound clean and dry, and attend dressing changes
- Return immediately if you develop fever, heavy bleeding, increasing pain or wound discharge
- Attend your follow-up appointment even if you feel well
